The children were digging caves in the sand dunes when the 11-year-old uncovered a horrific scene…
Eleven-year-old Connor Fitz-Gerald was playing with a few other kidsin the Marina Dunes when something went terribly wrong.
Five-year-old Alyssa Bostic was digging a sand cave with one of the other little girls, and she decided to crawl inside. While the other children had their backs turned, the cave completely collapsedburying Alyssa from head to toe.
Luckily, within a few minutes time, Connor started digging in the exact spot where the little girl was trapped. Just a few inches into the sand, he uncoveredAlyssa’s bag, and the horrified boy knew he had to react quickly.
The quick-thinking young man accurately assessed where her head would be according to the location of her bag, and he began burrowing in the sand in that spot. Soon, he saw Alyssa’s “limp and lifeless” body and he pulled her up onto ground level. Sincetheir parents were at least a quarter mile away, Connor knew he couldn’t afford to run to them to get help. Seeing Alyssa’s eyes, nose and mouth wereclogged with sand, he immediately began performing CPR. Though he had no formal training in the procedure, he learned just enough from watching the TV show NCIS.
His brave attempt revived Alyssa, and she finally began breathing again. They called 911 when their parents arrived, and the paramedics on scene reported that Alyssa likely would have died if it were not for Connor’s courageous act.
I am glad he was able to sit back and go, wait a minute somethings going on, theres not a parent here, I know theyre at least a quarter mile away, I need to do something, said Connor’s dad,Tim Fitz-Gerald.
Alyssa is now fully recovered and living a full life thanks to her 11-year-old hero.
